Script Frenzy 2012: 50% Finished!

Yes! As of today, I have passed the halfway point of Screnzy! Right now, I have 52 pages.

Now, I should explain how I got all those pages. This afternoon, because I didn’t do any scriptwriting over the weekend, I still had 42 pages, what I had on Friday. Then I was reading the screenplay formatting guidelines on Screnzy YWP because I had a question about something else. I noticed that screenplays are supposed to be written in 12-point Courier font. I was writing in 12-point Times New Roman, because that’s what the typeface on my computer is automatically set on. So I changed the font and started a new page for each new scene (another guideline I found) and had 9 more pages! Then I actually did some writing and added one page more.

And now, for some random scripty things!

1. I found this script on Screnzy YWP. After all the guidelines, they included an example so you can see what everything looks like all put together. It made me laugh, because the characters are the Screnzy/NaNo mods and the action is so silly.

2. I actually paused in my listening of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 soundtrack to watch this video, made by a Screnzier on YWP:

It doesn’t teach you how to format a script or offer any helpful advice. You could say there’s no point at all, because it doesn’t show you how to write a script. But it does motivate you. All those words adding up to pages, and pages adding up to a script really motivated me and made me feel like writing as fast as my fingers could fly over the keys (which isn’t very fast, admittedly).

3. I discovered that I am a rather fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants sort of person, having not even looked at the high school scriptwriting workbook, messed around with the scripting software, or tried the scriptwriting boot camp until today. Well, I must not be a total idiot, because I’ve been able to figure things out as I go.

4. I wish William Shakespeare could do a scriptwriting cameo. “Thou is writing thine script on a com-pu-ter? Thou doth not know how to format a play? Methinks I shall sign up for Screnzy and do better than thou, thou knave!” Sorry, I just read A Midsummer Night’s Dream and now I’m reading Much Ado About Nothing (both for British Literature for school).

5. I just realized I have no idea what genre my script is. It could be fantasy, or sci fi, or an adventure, or a war story, or an epic.

6. I just learned that if I look up Hunger Games music on YouTube because I really liked it, I can get totally distracted from my script and start watching all the trailers. Actually, I don’t need The Hunger Games or YouTube to get distracted from my script. All I need is something else to look at/do, and I forget about my script completely.

7. The adult Script Frenzy site has a ‘plot machine’ on the home page that you can use to get ideas. I was messing with it just now and here are some of the more interesting combinations:

Battling a Red Bull addiction, a man from Buffalo unknowingly arrives at a nudist colony.

Just before sunrise, a glowworm with the flu falls in love with a voice on the radio.

After a harsh break-up, a toddler with a smoking problem buys an unreliable time machine.

Who writes these things?!

Well, I hope you liked reading all those weird and not necessarily script-related things!

NEVILLEGIRL

Ha ha ha! I know how to write a script and you don’t!

(Laughs maniacally, then suddenly realizes something and looks disappointed)

Well, unless you’re doing Screnzy too…. oh man, now I’m embarassed. I think I’ll just leave now.

     (Exits)

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

NO! Thou is supposed to write ‘exeunt’ when a character doth leave!

NEVILLEGIRL

     (Comes back)

     Oh, shut up, Billy.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

     (Looks extremely offended)

How dare thou telleth me to stop my mouth! Mmphgmmmhmmmhghmm!!!

(Makes muffled sounds of indignation as Nevillegirl stuffs an old sock into his mouth)
